In a surprising political move, leaders of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) in Lira City have thrown their support behind Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng for the Lira City Woman Member of Parliament seat in the 2026-2031 term.
Despite FDC’s strong opposition to the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), the party leaders say their decision is based on leadership and vision rather than party affiliation.
On March 15, 2025, 253 FDC leaders met Dr. Aceng at her home in Ireda, Lira City East Division, where they officially endorsed her as the best candidate for the job. They also committed to actively campaigning for her across the city.
The FDC leaders explained that, with only two candidates in the race, both of whom are NRM ministers, the priority should be choosing a leader who will best serve Lira City. They emphasized that this decision does not mean FDC has joined the NRM but rather that they are putting the city’s future first.
The leaders also pledged to conduct a peaceful campaign free from threats, blackmail, and personal attacks. They condemned any attempts to turn the election into a bitter contest driven by insults and division.
During the meeting, they assured the minister of healthy of their unwavering support, citing her commendable work as both Lira City Woman MP and Health Minister.
However, they made it clear that FDC remains an independent opposition party and is not crossing over to NRM.
The FDC leaders have now called on all voters in Lira City to back the Doctor in 2026 to ensure continuity and progress.
The endorsement was signed by top FDC leaders in Lira City, including General Secretary Newton Okello, Chairman Obote Denis, Chairman Moses Etyang (Lira City East Division), Chairman Mzee Ogwal Bonny (Lira City West Division), and Women’s League Chairperson Ms. Oroma Janet, March 19, 2025.
