Describing it as a “rogue state,” Eng Winnie Byanyima (whose husband has been locked up in Luzira prison since last November for allegedly conspiring with others to assasinate Gen YK Museveni) has dared the agents of Gen Museveni’s state like defunct Independent news Magazine founder Andrew Mwenda to share the full story implicating Kizza Besigye in treasonable conspiracies.
Speaking Saturday to reporters at her Kasangati residence, Byanyima said that there wasn’t much in the one minute audio the state agents leaked late last year. She demanded that if the state has chosen that path of demonising her spouse to erode his reputation, as opposed to tabling their evidence in a proper court of law, let them share the full story as opposed to releasing mere teasers which don’t corraborate anything. A reporter had asked her to respond to claims by Mwenda to have verified and established that Besigye’s voice hadn’t been doctored on those bu-audios.
Byanyima said that the state ought to make out a full well-corrabprated case against Besigye as opposed to leaking one minute bu-audios which don’t amount to any evidence. She challenged Mwenda to turn up in Court or on any media platform and tell a full story implicating her husband. He can become a state witness. She advised him not to forget to corraborate the full context of that conversation and who exactly her husband was discussing with.
She asserted that the best way is for the state to prepare all its evidence in full and bring it on inside a court room during open hearing so that all Ugandans can, in black & white, see how treacherous Dr. Besigye is. She counseled that this exactly is what government prosecutors ought to do in an open court of law rather than trying to fabricate and manipulate things through the less scrutnized military tribunals.
She quoted Mwenda to have implied during a Thursday TV show that he and other Museveni camp members are prepared to destroy the reputation of Besigye using media platforms. Ms Byanyima said the state agents like Mwenda have resorted to amplifying one minute audio clips in order to demonise KB because they have become certain that their evidence is too inadequate to secure a conviction against her husband.
Byanyima also said that in a normally functioning country, they as the detained man’s next of kin would have reported to Police a case requiring Mwenda to be summoned and interrogated or even charged over his well stated intentions to harm or even bump off Dr. Kizza Besigye over claims that he conspired to assasinate the veteran leader from Rwakitura.
The UNAIDS Executive Director indicated that lodging a formal complaint at Police is an option they haven’t put off the table as a family and next of kin to Dr. Kizza Besigye who the veteran journalist Kanyandahi says ought to have instantly been killed in Nairobi as opposed to the military wasting time driving him back to Kampala. She says here is someone who has made his intentions to assasinate Dr. Kizza Besigye clear and on a public media platform, which is why Police ought to be interested as opposed to waiting to be prompted.
