Ex-Vice President has lately been an active contributor on a whatsapp forum called Senior Citizens. On there are many eminent citizens who always give their views on topical issues. The administrator is city evangelist Benjamin Kivumbi.
And this week, the pompous restoration of Uganda Airlines was a major talking point on the Senior Citizens forum, which besides Bukenya has many other former Ministers and MPs.
Many criticized the government decision as economically counter productive. The argument was that it makes no economic sense to revive the national career at a time the rest of the countries in the region are struggling with loss-making airlines.
BUKENYA VIEW
The former Vice President differed. He instead commended the President saying Uganda Airlines’ closure was a huge mistake which he and others in government then vehemently opppsed.

He said he was happy after so many years, the big man from Rwakitura had finally come to see what he and others saw 20 years ago. He asked colleagues on the forum to be optimistic for once saying pessimism always kills rather than building nations.
He then suggested that Museveni shouldn’t stop at reviving Uganda Airlines but should consider rectifying his other past mistakes by considering restoration of Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) as a very urgent matter.
Bukenya suggested that many other parastatals that were anomalously wound up should be restored to enhance service delivery in Uganda.
Sceptics have since suggested that the Shs3.4trn going into Uganda Airlines revival’s initial phase should go into recapitalizing Uganda Development Bank and Post Bank so that Ugandan businesses (SMEs and others), who can’t break even becase of cripplingly very high commercial interest rates, can have acces to cheap credit and begin trading more profitably.
