Having failed to gain the anticipated acceptability by voters in Lwengo (Bukoto South), Dr Abed Bwanika has now resorted to courting Bobi Wine to declare him his candidate for the position of Kampala Lord Mayorship in 2021. Sources close to him say, Bwanika (who has thrice performed dismally for Presidency) believes he can ride on the People Power momentum and win hearts of voters in Kampala. This, sources say, partly explains why Bwanika (who on Saturday hinted on Mayorship on CBS radio) has lately been very hostile to Erias Lukwago against whom he has occasionally used deragatory language. Yet it’s not only Bwanika hoping to ride on Mr. Wine to become Kampala Lord Mayor come 2021. Others include Frank Gashumba, Latif Sebaggala and Mike Mabikke who voters rejected in 2011 when he first attempted Mayorship. Latif hopes that having served as MP for 20 years (since 2001) he has now grown sufficient political balls to wrestle with Lukwago. His brother Nasser Sebaggala was Mayor and his performance left electors crying of betrayal and one time Seya was thumped by vendors in Park Yard market where they fed him on shoes claiming he has betrayed them by supporting money man Basajjabalaba to take their market. The same Seya bad legacy cost Mabikke (his former aide and advisor) when he tried to compete with Lukwago in 2011. Mabikke (who is now in the US), just like Abed Bwanika, is counting on Bobi to get him votes in 2021 to become Lord Mayor. This has led to fears that the resultant fighting between the duo could create polarisis in & weaken Bobi’s People Power Movement. Frank Gashumba, whose supporters say Lukwago has served enough, is counting on his track record as an outspoken critic of the Museveni regime. Watch this space!
