Andrew Muhwezi, a 47-year-old private security guard is nursing wounds he sustained after being shot while robbing fresh foods from Kabale Modern Central Market.
Muhwezi attached to Securiko Uganda Limited Kabale branch and a resident of Nyakahita village, Kyanamira Sub County in Kabale district allegedly gained access into Kabale modern central market in the wee hours of Thursday at around 2:00 am and broke into the stalls of Gloria Kyomuhangi, Zaudia Natukunda, and Allen Kyoheirwe.
Muhwezi allegedly stole four clusters of yellow bananas, 13 carrots, 1 basket of oranges, 1 tin of onion seeds, 10 kilograms of fresh beans, 1 tray of apples, 10 kilograms of peas, and 2 baskets of onions all valued at 440,000 Shillings.
Muhwezi however ran out of luck when Police Constable George Muhumuza who was on night duty in the market ordered him to stop. Muhwezi declined and instead fled as he looked for an exit route. Muhwezi tried to shoot at Police Constable Muhumuza, but Muhumuza responded swiftly and shot Muhwezi in the leg.
Elly Maate, Police Spokesperson for Kigezi Region says that Muhwezi is currently admitted at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital under police watch. Maate says that police led by Hakim Mukama, Kabale District Criminal Investigations Department Officer visited the scene and recovered all exhibits including the rifle of the security guard and rounds of ammunition to help in investigations.
Maate adds that after recovery, Muhwezi will be paraded before the court to answer the charges accordingly. The case is registered at Kabale police station under file number CRB: 323/2024. Vendors selling fresh foods have been protesting the insecurity of their goods in the market.
In March 2024, vendors blocked Members of Parliament on the Public Service and Local Government committee led by Ben Batom Koryong, MP for Dopoth West County, and Jimmy Lwanga, MP for Njeru Municipality accusing the government of failure to swiftly resolve the lockups and relocation feud.
They argued that the feud led to Kabale municipality authorities failing to coordinate with vendors so that they fully deploy enough security guards-URN (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [whatsapp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
