In a move that underscores the growing influence of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Igara County East MP, Hon. Mawanda Micheal Maranga, has officially declared his candidacy for the position of NRM National Vice Chairperson, Western Region.
The PLU Director of Mobilization expressed gratitude to party supporters for their unwavering commitment to the NRM and called for a renewed sense of purpose as the country approaches the election period. He emphasized the need to reflect on past lessons, acknowledge the progress made under NRM leadership, and continue strengthening ideological growth.
Hon. Mawanda’s announcement follows guidance from General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the PLU Chairman, who had earlier advised that PLU members seeking elective positions should do so within NRM structures, given the close alignment of values between the two entities. “PLU is a civic organization and not a political party,” he noted, reinforcing the league’s continued loyalty to the ruling party.
The legislator framed his bid as an opportunity for PLU and NRM supporters to “redefine ourselves and prepare for a better future for this country.” He urged Ugandans to remain focused on national development, dismissing detractors who have sought to paint PLU as an unpatriotic movement.
He referenced ongoing legal proceedings concerning allegations against PLU members, maintaining their innocence and expressing confidence in the judicial process.
Quoting former U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt, Hon. Mawanda remarked, “A vote is like a rifle, its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.” He urged Ugandans to make informed choices to ensure a politically stable and peaceful Uganda.
As he enters the race for the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC), Hon. Mawanda pledged to work as part of a collective team to address the pressing challenges facing Ugandans.
He called for full support from party members and the broader electorate, assuring them of his commitment to advancing the country’s development agenda.
His declaration marks a significant step in the political realignment within the ruling party, with PLU members seeking to cement their presence in key leadership positions ahead of the next election cycle.
