UPPA Condemnation on the brutal violence on Miracle Ibra. The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association (UPPA) strongly condemns the brutal attack on the Top TV journalist Miracle Ibra for the brutal violence meted out on him by yet to be identified security personnel.
The highly dreadful incident happened on Wednesday 26th February, 2025 as he covered the nomination of National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Elias Nalukoola Luyimbazi for the Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
This senseless violence is a clear violation of press freedom and a blatant disregard for the safety of journalists who play an indispensable role in Uganda’s democratic process and nation building. We urge the security forces to respect the rights of journalists covering this ongoing by-election, future elections plus other activities as and when they happen.
The media is not an enemy of the state, but rather a vital component of a healthy democracy. In so doing, journalists play a crucial role in holding those in power accountable and providing citizens with accurate information.
We demand that the relevant authorities take immediate action to investigate this incident and bring the perpetrators to justice. We also call on the government to ensure that journalists are accorded enabling environment to be able to perform their duties without fear of intimidation or violence.
The Uganda Parliamentary Press Association stands in solidarity with Miracle Ibra and all journalists who have been victims of violence and intimidation. We will continue to advocate for the protection of press freedom and the safety of journalists in Uganda. [Signed by] Samuel Ibanda Mugabi President, Uganda Parliamentary Press Association.
