By Mulengera Reporters

For 97 years, the Oscars have delivered history-making moments. Some we celebrate, some we debate, but all of them shape the world of cinema.

Hattie McDaniel broke barriers in 1940, becoming the first Black actor to win an Oscar. Sidney Poitier followed in 1964, winning Best Actor and changing Hollywood forever. Denzel Washington and Halle Berry made history on the same night in 2002. Jordan Peele became the first Black winner of Best Original Screenplay in 2018. And in 2022, Will Smith made headlines twice in one night – once on stage, and once at the podium.

The Oscars make history every year. But history is only history if you see it unfold.

This year promises to be no different, with outstanding Black talents leading the nominations.

Cynthia Erivo, nominated for Best Actress for her role as Elphaba in Wicked, stands on the brink of achieving EGOT status. Colman Domingo earned a Best Actor nomination for his powerful performance in Sing, Sing. Zoe Saldaña is up for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Emilia Pérez – her first Oscar nomination.

These performances are more than nominations – they’re moments you’ll want to say you saw live.
