The President of Uganda
State House
Kampala, Uganda
Dear President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni,
I’m writing to express my deep concern about the deteriorating health of Dr. Kiiza Besigye, a renowned opposition leader and former presidential candidate, but above all, your former bush war doctor. His recent court appearance, where he looked visibly unwell, has sparked widespread worry among Ugandans and the international community.
As you’re aware, Dr. Besigye has been a vocal advocate for democracy, human rights, and good governance in Uganda. His bravery and selflessness in standing up against injustice have earned him immense respect and admiration. It’s unsettling to see him languishing in prison, his health in decline, and his fundamental rights trampled upon.
Dr. Besigye’s contributions to Uganda’s struggle for freedom and democracy cannot be overstated. He risked his life to join the bush war, fighting alongside you and other comrades to liberate our country from tyranny. His commitment to the cause of justice and equality has remained unwavering, even in the face of persecution and intimidation.
The reports of Dr. Besigye’s mistreatment in prison are alarming. His refusal to take medication in protest of his detention is a testament to his resilience and conviction ¹. It’s imperative that your government ensures his access to proper medical care, humane treatment, and a fair trial.
In the event of any harm befalling Dr. Besigye while in custody, the consequences for your government’s reputation and legitimacy would be severe. The international community would likely condemn such a tragedy, and Uganda’s standing on the global stage would suffer irreparable damage.
I urge you to reconsider Dr. Besigye’s detention and to ensure that his rights are respected and protected. His release would be a significant step towards healing the wounds of our nation and promoting national reconciliation.
Writing with a bleeding heart.
Defiant Matn
