President Yoweri Museveni has endorsed the establishment of a prepaid water meter manufacturing plant in Uganda, marking a significant step towards enhancing the country’s water access, conservation, and utility efficiency.
The President welcomed the initiative, describing it as timely and aligned with Uganda’s national priorities of industrialization, job creation, and access to essential services.
The project is a collaboration between Helcraw Electrical Pvt Ltd, a Zimbabwean company, and Liaison Technologies, a Chinese firm specializing in prepaid water metering systems.
According to Brendon Jere, Director of Helcraw Electrical, the prepaid water meter system allows consumers to pay only for the water they use, fostering accountability, fairness, and conservation.
This model has already shown transformative results in Zimbabwe, and Uganda is expected to benefit even more from localized production.
The factory is expected to improve water access, promote conservation, and enhance utility efficiency in Uganda and the wider East African region.
It will also create jobs and support local industrial growth, positioning Uganda as a regional hub for smart water management technologies.
To fast-track the project, President Museveni has directed the Minister of State for Microfinance, Hon. Haruna Kasolo, to work with relevant authorities to ensure the investors are granted necessary licenses and allocated suitable land for the factory.
Additionally, the President has endorsed a proposal by Shapoorji Pallonji & Company Pvt Ltd to establish an integrated bulk water supply system for irrigation in the Teso region, underscoring the critical role of irrigation in agricultural productivity and water availability.
