On Wednesday 5th February, we carried a news story from the day’s proceedings under the Legal Affairs Committee of Parliament which currently is scrutinizing and processing the Marriage Bill. A group of women leaders and activists appeared before the committee to give their views on the bill.
The women leaders and activists included Rose Wakikona, the Deputy Executive Director AT Women Pro-Bono Initiative. In her submission, Wakikona proposed and demanded that it becomes law in Uganda for women to also be permitted to be involved in more than one marital relationships since the same is permissible for their male counterparts in Uganda.
She asserted that this equalization would comply with provisions of the Constitution which requires equality and equal treatment between men and women in Uganda. The committee received her views which received support from some members present as others objected to the same as abominable and morally repugnant.
The anomaly in our story was that Rose Wakikona was inadvertently referred to as an official from the Federation of Uganda Women Lawyers or FIDA-Uganda whereas not. She isn’t the Head at FIDA, and actually doesn’t work there.
She doesn’t represent FIDA and it was inappropriate for the views she expressed to be attributed to FIDA. We inadvertently attributed her views to FIDA Uganda, which was untrue and inappropriate because she has nothing to do with FIDA. For she doesn’t work there.
It has been established that this inadvertently erroneous reporting has caused inconvenience among stakeholders, which is regrettable. We regret it, it shouldn’t have happened. This is formally register our regret and apology to CEO Lilliane Byarugaba Adriko who heads FIDA-Uganda as CEO, her staff, workmates and other stakeholders who might have been negatively impacted by this inadvertent mis-reporting on our part.
