Addressing the Great Buganda Lukiiko this Monday morning, Katikkiro Peter Mayiga has condemned what he called political persecution targeting MPs Betty Nambooze, Francis Zzake and the big man himself Bobi Wine. Mayiga specifically made reference to these three legislators and wondered which type of people are running government today. “Do they still have any conscience?” he wondered in a Luganda submission that was punctuated with applause. “I saw Hon Nambooze being charged in court on a wheelchair. Hon Zzake being charged on a stretcher. Where else does this happen? Which sort of people do such a thing?” Mayiga insisted the trio are clearly being persecuted for their political views something which the Constitution of Uganda clearly prohibits in its Bill of Rights section which is chapter 4. Mayiga counselled that political opposition isn’t a crime because no government can ever exist without opponents. He wondered why the NRM government has resorted to brutalizing instead of dialoguing with its political opponents. “You will always have opponents and it has nothing to with the government being good or bad. Opposition will always exist. That happens elsewhere and there is nothing criminal about it,” Mayiga told the cheerful Lukiiko members. Saying show of might won’t lead anyone anywhere especially in the long term, Mayiga underlined Zzake’s right to seek and obtain treatment in a medical facility of his own choice because it’s all about medical consent.
