Writing on behalf of hundreds of professional colleages, UMA General Secretary Dr. Joel Mirembe has made it clear that the professional medical fraternity of Uganda totally stands in solidarity with their fellow Doctor, Kizza Besigye whose persecution has globally bruised Uganda’s image since last November.
He was kidnapped from Kenya whose media continues to demonise Gen Museveni up to this day and the Ugandan military has continued holding on to Dr. KB even after the Supreme Court Judgement which invalidated military involvement in criminal trials.
Museveni’s son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also the CDF for the Ugandan army, says that Dr. Besigye has to be beheaded or hanged in the Amin era-like public execution fashion because he was audio-recorded wishing death to Museveni and his family members. The First Son has decreed that the only way Dr. Besigye can survive execution is by owning up and apologizing to the man who has ruled Uganda for 40 years and still counting.
On Friday, Dr. Besigye appeared in Court and seemed frail because of the hunger strike his wife Eng Winnie Byanyima recently told the international media had been commenced to protest what she called continued illegal detention of Dr. KB. In Parliament, the Besigye persecution has repeatedly been referenced by a signifcant number of MPs in a bi-partisan manner.
Whereas several ruling party MPs like Barnabas Tinkasimire and Theodore Sekikubo have made it clear that KB’s blood will be blamed on President Museveni and his son, should the Retired Colonel die in Luzira, LoP Joel Ssenyonyi says that Parliament should speak out more deliberately to avoid being seen to have betrayed KB and other political prisoners the way they let down Mohammed Segirinya whose NUP party maintains died because of the endless persecution Museveni’s cadre judges like Justice Lawrence Tweyanze subjected him to.
The latest images of Dr. KB on Friday sparked plenty of online condemnation against Gen Museveni and his son who Ugandans on social media say will be cursed for generations should Dr. Besigye leave the Luzira detention facility in a coffin.
At the Buganda Road Court, where he has been defending himself against rioting-related charges since 2022, Dr. Besigye seemed frail and fatigued to the extent that his female and male supporters, including MPs and other elected leaders, left the court room crying and castigating the Magistrate for sending him back to Luzira as opposed to releasing him to go get medical treatment. Dr. Besigye could barely stand nor walk unsupported. He equally struggled to breath or verbally respond to anything inside that Court room.
It’s against this background that the Medical Association members on Saturday came out with a strongly-worded statement making it clear that patient rights, including inmates’ like Besigye, are non-negotiable. The statement makes it clear that there are several international obligations Uganda signed onto which make it mandatory for Museveni and his son to respect patient rights.
The statement demands that an arrangement be urgently made to medically intervene in the situation because Dr. KB’s condition is clearly critical and needs urgent mitigation to ‘avoid irreversible consequences.’ The medics make it clear that the Besigye persecution has grown to a point where they can’t claim to remain neutral anymore.
To them, it’s time for all citizens of Uganda to stand up and call out Gen Museveni and his son who has been very outspoken while justifying why the time has come for Dr. KB to be liquidated. He has even proposed a date and venue for the proposed public execution of Dr. Kizza Besigye who for five years risked his own life to serve as a personal physician for then rebel leader Yoweri Museveni, and has never demanded to be paid even a penny for his services up to this day.
