The Ministry of Health in Uganda has released a list of medical interns who will be deployed to various internship training centers across the country.
This internship will run for one year, from August 3, 2025, to July 31, 2026.
The deployment includes graduates who completed their training in early 2024 and earlier.
The Ministry cited limited funding and the need for adequate training facilities as reasons for conducting the deployment in phases, with a total of 2,025 interns placed.
The Uganda Medical Internship Committee (UMIC) Secretariat has concluded the placement process.
However, this deployment excludes nurses and midwives who upgraded from the Diploma level, as their internship requirement was waived following a resolution by the Human Capital Development Program Inter-Ministerial Committee on Health and Education.
In a letter from the Director General of Health Services, Dr. Charles Olaro, addressed to Executive Directors of National Referral Hospitals, Senior Executive Consultants of Regional Referral Hospitals, Executive Consultants of General Hospital Internship Training Centers, and Chief Executive Officers of PNFP Internship Training Centers, the Ministry shared the final list of medical interns assigned to each facility.
Dr. Olaro urged the facilities to make immediate arrangements to ensure the timely commencement of the internship program.
He also emphasized the importance of conducting facility-based induction and orientation sessions for the interns before they begin clinical duties.
Furthermore, he instructed that the list of interns who report to their respective hospitals be submitted to the Ministry by August 15, 2025, to enable timely processing of their allowances.
Medical interns who include doctors, pharmacists, and nurses must complete a one-year placement in accredited hospitals to qualify for permanent practicing licenses from their professional councils.
Interns continue to play a critical role in Uganda’s healthcare system, helping to bridge the staffing gap caused by the limited number of fully employed health professionals. Below is the list of medical interns for the 2025/2026 internship cycle:
