Kasengejje Senior Secondary School was a hub of excitement on March 19, 2025, as Airtel Uganda, in partnership with UNICEF Uganda, celebrated the International Day of Digital Learning.
The event marked a significant milestone, connecting the 130th school to the internet and the announcement of plans to extend connectivity to 70 more schools.
A river is made drop by drop, and Airtel Uganda is steadily transforming digital education in Uganda, one school at a time.
The day’s celebrations began with a warm welcome for Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, Soumendra Sahu, who was greeted by students with traditional dances and a bouquet. He reaffirmed Airtel’s commitment to integrating technology into learning, highlighting that 18 schools in the Karamoja region have already benefited from this initiative.
“We are proud to be a strong partner in Uganda’s education sector,” said Mr. Sahu. “By providing internet access, we are ensuring that students in all regions, regardless of location, have equal learning opportunities.”
UNICEF’s Representative, Mr. Thomas Meyerer, commended Airtel and other partners for their role in revolutionizing education. He emphasized that the initiative aligns with UNICEF’s broader strategy to enhance content, capacity, and connectivity, ultimately fostering Uganda’s economic growth.
David Birungi, Airtel Uganda’s Head of Public Relations, echoed this sentiment, stating that the internet breaks barriers and makes knowledge accessible to all. “So far, 42,000 students are connected, with over 30 terabytes of data provided,” he revealed.
Representing the Ministry of Education and Sports, Jane Egau acknowledged Airtel’s efforts, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. She highlighted the impact of initiatives like the ‘Learn From Home’ bundles, which enabled students to continue their education remotely.
“Digital learning is highly effective,” she noted. “It provides flexibility and improves learning outcomes. Airtel Uganda’s role in providing free online resources is commendable.”
Airtel Uganda’s digital learning initiative is a testament to the power of technology in shaping the future. As Uganda embraces the digital age, Airtel continues to bridge the connectivity gap, ensuring that no student is left behind.
