July last year, there was widespread when Investment & Privatization Minister took two months leave to complete her graduate studies at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy [Tufts University] in the United States.
Being the controversial figure, she is, Anite’s abrupt and conspicuous absence from the Kampala political scene fueled speculation that she had been fired from cabinet which turned out untrue to the embarrassment of her adversaries.
The Koboko Municipality MP (whose graduation was Friday) has incognito been pursuing a Master’s degree in International Law & Diplomacy at the Fletcher School of Law & Diplomacy which is part of Tuffs University.
President Museveni, who she idolizes as her mentor and political father, is the one who paid for her and the course in total cost $90,000 (which roughly translates into Shs400m). Gratefully, she hasn’t let him down passing in flying colors and graduating with several others on Friday.
She has been undergoing this training (largely a leadership course) for the last two years and Museveni’s $90,000 was a consolidated figure covering everything including tuition and other expenses. The outspoken politician previously spoke to Mulengera News and defended the $90,000 expenditure saying there was nothing out of character since this is a very supportive President who had in the past sponsored education of many other politicians.
These include ex-Vice President Specioza Kazibwe who the Weekly Observer newspaper reported in early 2000s to have received Shs2.5bn from the President towards her PhD at Harvard University. Years earlier, the same President had financed ex-Kampala Mayor Nasser Sebaggala’s education at an academic institution in UK. Then more recently former State Finance Minister (for Microfinance) Caroline Okao and other elected leaders graduated with MBAs from Aptech where the President paid their tuition.
This is why a jubilant Anite maintains that “there is nothing out of character because he is a President who believes in building the capacity of the leaders he serves with in the management of this country.”
