Jacqueline Mbabazi, the wife to former Prime Minister, recently opened up to a group of MPs who had visited her at their Kololo home and confirmed she had been poisoned by one of her political adversaries in the NRM party. Numbering about 5, the MPs had responded to an invitation for lunch that was extended to them by Jacqueline to thank them for their support as the JPAM camp went about the difficult task of collecting evidence and commissioning affidavits as they prepared their election petition in 2016. During that lunch meeting, Jacqueline told them she would never forgive the top official in the NRM who personally poisoned her using a sandwich. She told them that at the height of the Mbabazi political fallout, she received a phone call from an influential figure in the party who requested to have a private engagement with her regarding how to reconcile them back to the mainstream of the ruling party. She says the official declined her suggestion to meet at a neutral venue and insisted to meet with her at his own residence. And when she was there, Jacqueline says her host signaled one of the maids at the home to serve them with juice and two sandwiches. “I was a bit suspicious because it seemed like this particular maid had been asked to prepare this sandwich long before my host was even sure that I would accept to go for the meeting at home. Indeed, the maid appeared nervous as she served me my sandwich. I felt a bit apprehensive but I nevertheless ate the snack and took the juice. But as I was chewing the snack something felt funny but I carried on because this was a comrade in the struggle,” Jacqueline was quoted to have told the MPs. “When I returned home I kept wondering what was in that sandwich and told my husband about it. He joked about it and we took it casually. But days later I felt extremely unwell and had to be taken to Germany and later to London. Toxicology tests were carried out first in Germany and later in London and in both cases poison was confirmed. The UK medical team discovered much more and suspected the poisoner used banned chemicals to poison me. That’s why I’m continuing to cooperate with the Scotland Yard police of London because they have become interested to establish how the poisoner came to have possession of such strictly prohibited substances.” She also explained that the fact that her skin was rapidly turning coal-black was to the UK authorities indicative that this was a prohibited substance. She told the MPs that she regrets that the poisoner indisposed her and deprived her the opportunity to participate in the 2016 campaigns which she intended to use to vigorously campaign for her husband while exposing betrayal in the NRM.
