Come Monday 4th May, Gen Museveni will have with his Ministers have termed the equivalent of the last supper which Jesus Christ (Our Lord) had with his disciples before crucifixion, which was a consequential happening in his earthly ministry. On that day, Cabinet members will have what is supposed to be their last Cabinet session before the current term of government (2021-2026) comes to an end.
Some Ministers would like to use that session to make personal appeals and plead with Museveni (who will most likely be attending it personally as opposed to delegating Jessica Alupo and Nabbanja) to remain supportive towards them even after end of their tour of service. It is his discretion, as the appointing authority, to determine who gets promoted, demoted, dropped or retained in the post-May 12th Cabinet.
Within the precincts of State House last Monday, there was a lot of bunter as Ministers looked forward to the Monday of the much dreaded last supper. Many spoke about the political uncertainty and their preparedness or lack of it regarding what is potentially coming in the life after.
The outgoing Minister of Justice Norbert Mao was among those who freely shared their views during this informal interactive session on the sidelines of the last Monday Cabinet meeting. He made it clear that he was seriously taking on Anita Among for the position of Speakership and was emotionally prepared to face the consequences, whatever way this ends.
Sounding characteristically sarcastic, Mao said he doubts he will be put back into Cabinet in case he doesn’t win the Speakership race. “That is why as plan B, I’m prepared to do my work and excel as a back bencher representing my people of Laro-Pece because I’m now their MP. In fact, I will have no problem becoming the leading and most outspoken opposition voice filling up the vacuum left by the departure of Ibrahim Semujju Nganda. I will have no problem becoming the new Semujju Nganda of that Parliament and I can create a lot of headache for people on the other side.”
Many fellow Ministers present agreed that this is a role Norbert Mao can excel at doing given that he is even more eloquent, authoritative and more persuasive than Semujju Nganda whose flowery language during Parliamentary debates has given online content creators and mainstream media plenty of fodder over the last five years of Anita Among’s 11th Parliament.
