President Museveni has explained why none of his daughters works in government or holds a public service job anywhere. Speaking at Migera UWESO Secondary School in Nakasongola, where his wife Janet Kataha’s 77th birthday anniversary was recently celebrated, Museveni explained that his daughters have done so well in farming and other private or non-state engagements, to the extent that none of them misses or craves for a government job.

Responding to the day’s main preacher Bishop Laban Jjjumba who had called on him to amplify messaging against Uganda’s young people flocking Arab countries where they end up doing odd jobs and being exploited, Gen Museveni illustrated the extent to which it was possible to remain in Uganda and lead a very good life without even having to have a government job.

He explained that whereas the entire public service boasts of a combined total of just 480,000 jobs, the manufacturing sector and factories (many of which are recently established) are employing up to 1.2m Ugandans. He said this shows that there is a lot of potential for the country’s economy to employ Uganda’s youths without having to rely on him as President or the GoU which he leads.

Museveni made use of the large screens in one of the tents to play video clips to demonstrate to Bishop Jjjumba that those young people who have faithfully listened to and taken his advice seriously have made it creating wealth for themselves and jobs for others.

He gave the example of State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama who is leveraging the 4-acre model in his Kibale constituency to create wealth for himself and jobs for fellow youths. He said there are many other young people who have succeeded like Byamukama (he gets Shs55m per month from just eggs) and have no appetite going for odd jobs in Dubai.

He added that all this is proof that, as President, he has done his part except that majority young people of Uganda often disregard his advice and instead listen to some other people who end up diverting them into going for odd jobs in Arab countries.

He further demonstrated the workability of project Uganda by referring to his own daughters (Natasha, Patience & Diana) who he said are doing well in farming among other private enterprises. He referenced on Patience Rwabwogo, who led prayers at the event, and told the guests how she took to very successful farming as soon as she returned to Uganda upon completing her studies at the University of Minnesota in the US. He said Natasha, who was present too at the Migera event, is equally doing very well as a livestock farmer.

Gen Museveni explained that even Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, his only child working in government as CDF, is a successful farmer and only finds himself having to hold a government job because he is passionate about soldiering-as opposed to being a salaried government worker out of mere desire to earn money and survive.

He made it clear that the Chief of Defense Forces can live comfortably well on his farming business without holding a government job or earning a government salary. The President called on religious leaders like Jjumba to help him rally the rest of the Ugandan youth to emulate his children’s example to deliberately go into hard work as opposed to over glorifying doing odd jobs in foreign countries.

Even when he made his observations, Bishop Laban Jjumba thanked the President for his efforts to promote wealth creation while eliminating household poverty in Uganda. He also commended him for prioritizing job creation for the country’s youths.
