There is cause for alarm among some key NRM CEC members after diehards from Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) declared bids to take their positions at the ruling party’s elective conference later this year.
Those PLU giants seeking CEC level positions so far include Minister Haruna Kasolo who wants Buganda NRM Chairmanship currently held by Godfrey Kiwanda Ssuubi.
The other is Michael Mawanda who wants the position of NRM chairman for Western region currently being held by Dr. Chris Baryomunsi who is also MP Kinkizi East in Kanungu.
As all these warm up, the NRM party is mulling issuing CEC level guidelines that will restrict party cadres from holding multiple high level positions when several other cadres remain undeployed and virtually jobless.
Like Haruna Kasolo, Baryomunsi is CEC member, Minister and MP too which makes people like him targets should the party guidelines restrict such holding of multiple positions become reality. Arinaitwe Rwakajara, who wants Baryomunsi’s seat too, is also already an MP for Workers and he is in his 2nd term.
Like Kiwanda, Baryomunsi says he isn’t worried of competition from PLU big man Michael Mawanda. The gentle political giant from Kanungu says he has always faced opponents and has always floored them as is going to be the case even this time round.
Mulengera News understands that PLU has a strategy to have its adherents numerically dominate CEC positions as 2026-2031 will most likely be Gen Museveni’s very final term as President of Uganda as his son Gen MK, who is also the PLU founding chairman, will be more than ready to take the mantle thereafter. Dominating CEC can help simplifying the post-Museveni succession calculus in favor of Gen MK who currently also serves as the CDF.
