We continue serializing leaked confidential conversations Gen Kale Kayihura has been having with his guests at the Makindye detention facility including his wife, children, lawyers and private doctors. One of the areas that the ex-IGP has inevitably had to discuss with his lawyers, who will ultimately be crafting his defense when he eventually gets charged, is the 17th March 2017 shooting of AIGP Andrew Felix Kaweesi. Kayihura, who also furiously shut up one of the interrogators who asked him “why did you kill Kaweesi,” has apparently maintained significant consistence on the Kaweesi topic. “I put it to you, you murdered Kaweesi,” one of the interrogators, who were led by Security Minister Elly Tumwine, dared Kale moments after being driven to Makindye that fateful Wednesday when he was ferried from his Kashagama farm in Lyantonde district. Clearly discomforted by this unexpected question, a fire-breathing Kayihura shot back “Why would I do that?” and the interrogator, remaining unintimidated, answered him “because you feared he was going to take your job [as IGP].” Seemingly unmoved, Kayihura said “but I’m the one who promoted Kaweesi to become the rising star everybody came to admire.” That was on that fateful Wednesday when Deputy CDF Gen Wilson Mbadi landed at Entebbe Airport with Gen Kayihura before driving him to Makindye which has been his abode up to this day. But in the days that followed, his lawyers and doctors were granted access to the detention facility and they stayed with the General for hours. And one of the areas they prompted him to discuss was the Kaweesi murder. What does he say about it? Did he actually have a hand in it as has been implied by media reports? Kayihura met the lawyers and medics separately yet there is striking similarity in what he told them. Firstly he told them he is very bitter with all media outlets, except NBS TV, because he believes it’s them who have repeatedly reported so and thereby portraying him as a murderer which he maintains he isn’t. “He told me he expected the media to say anything about him but not insinuate that he killed Kaweesi. He says much as he is permitted access, he doesn’t want newspapers anymore. What he says he has been watching is only NBS TV but he is beginning to become disappointed with inaccurate reports about his saga. He says he doesn’t want to watch anything anymore,” said one of Kayihura’s lawyers directly paraphrasing what he says the incarcerated General told him. A family source quotes the same Kayihura responding as follows to one of his private doctors who asked him about Kaweesi murder: “Let me tell you Dr. xxx I was IGP for all those years but very few officers in police correctly understood me. Kaweesi was one of the very few who understood and bought into my vision. He was a performer and was my redeemer in many things. The PR department of police was dead and it was Kaweesi who revived it as I concentrated on more important police work. He shared my vision from day one and I didn’t have many officers who loyally understood my vision for Uganda Police Force like he did. I was his mentor and he always wished me well as IGP. So this is all nonsense. There is no reason why I could have killed Kaweesi.” Kayihura said this to one of his doctors in the presence of some family members. Next we shall disclose how & why Kayihura came to be permitted to eat only food from home exclusively prepared by his wife Angela and other family members.
