The Ministry of Works and Transport is considering a second closure of Karuma Bridge on the River Nile to complete critical repair works on the facility that connects northern Uganda to the central region.

Gen. Katumba Wamala, Minister for Works and Transport, revealed this on Wednesday while appearing before Parliament’s Budget Committee. He had been summoned to provide updates on the status of the transition following the rationalization of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) and Uganda Road Fund (URF).

The Minister informed legislators that the Ministry is currently investigating the condition of the bridge to determine whether a full closure will be necessary to ensure the repair works are completed.

“Our technical team is conducting examinations to determine whether the expansion joints can be fixed while vehicles continue crossing, or if a full closure for a few days will be required. Once a decision is made, we will communicate accordingly,” said Gen. Katumba.

The bridge, a critical connection for northern Uganda, was reopened to light vehicles on December 20, 2024, after a three-month closure for initial repairs. During this time, traffic was diverted to alternative routes, including the arduous connection through Murchison Falls National Park.

Gen. Katumba emphasized that the remaining works, including the installation of imported expansion joints, must be completed to allow the passage of heavy trucks.

“We reopened the bridge for light vehicles, but heavy trucks have not yet been allowed to use it. The materials required for the repairs, specifically the expansion joints, have now been imported, and these will enable the bridge to accommodate all types of vehicles once installed,” he explained.

The Minister assured MPs that if a second closure is deemed necessary, it will not coincide with the ongoing school term opening period to avoid disruptions for parents and guardians returning learners to school.

“I instructed my team not to consider closure during this period when learners are being taken back to school. After that, we will assess whether a closure is necessary and communicate the decision,” said Gen. Katumba.

The school term opening period is expected to conclude by the end of February, with Senior Five students reporting to school.

The initial closure of Karuma Bridge caused significant anxiety in northern Uganda, with businesses reporting a decline in activity. However, the government assured the public of expedited repair works and revealed plans for a new bridge to address long-term connectivity challenges-Parliament Watch.
