Hardly a week after DP Bloc promoters announced their “One to One” strategy of sharing political strengths based on regions to overcome NRM in 2021, JEEMA which has always been their close ally has registered its skepticisms regarding the workability of the approach they are suggesting. Abdul Noor Kyamundu who speaks for JEEMA (whose president Asuman Basalirwa has actively been sympathetic to DP Bloc) says that the “One to One” approach is likely to fail or favor NRM the more even before it is implemented. In a phone interview with Mulengera news, Kyamundu said that what the DP colleagues are saying is generally okay but JEEMA has reservations on the requirement or proposal for each party to be designated a region they should galvanize for the opposition while routing out the NRM. Kyamundu said that: “This strategy is announced early but for me I doubt that it will work because the selection of candidates should only base on which candidate is strong not only on ground but also when he enters into Parliament.” He added that as JEEMA they are positive about joining the subsequent Alliance the Bloc promoters say is their ultimate goal-bringing together different political formations. He said that there is a need for scrutiny of some DP proposals when time for the Alliance comes because of the coercive approach some of the Alliance promoters (operating under DP Bloc) are using. He says he prefers to be courted rather than coerced into becoming a member of the Alliance. He says this forceful approach might do more harm than good. Kyamundu said the formula of assigning a region to a party is very defective because it’s impossible to find one political party that can be acceptable to all opposition strong men and women as the best. The practice is even in regions where the opposition has some strength, the support is shared between different parties as opposed to all activists belonging to one party. The proposal the Bwanikas are proposing could lead to a situation where people are conscripted to confess a particular party simply because it’s the one to which their respective region has been assigned.
