Women in small and retail businesses have this Wednesday, been encouraged to adopt digital marketing tools and expand their networks to grow their businesses, at the Abakyala Ku Ntiiko Women’s Initiative, organized by Equity Bank at Lira Hotel.
Prof. Judith Abal, the keynote speaker, challenged women entrepreneurs to use social media for marketing instead of casual conversations. “Young people are selling their products faster because they have embraced technology. Do not fear. Ask them to teach you,” she advised.
The Abakyala Ku Ntiiko initiative aims to equip women in micro and retail businesses with financial knowledge, business skills, and easier access to banking services.
Statistics show that over 38% of women in business struggle to obtain loans and insurance, limiting their growth. Equity Bank is addressing this gap by offering tailored financial education, peer mentorship, and affordable loan and insurance products.
Prof. Abal further advised women to diversify their income streams. “Don’t rely on just one business. Running at least two small-scale businesses helps you manage seasonal market changes and repay your loans with ease,” she emphasized. She also warned against poor-quality products and services, a key reason for business failure.
Peter Ssemakalu, Equity Bank’s Regional Manager for Greater North, commended the women for their participation and urged them to take advantage of products like EquiMama and new insurance solutions. “We are committed to empowering women, not just financially but with the right tools and knowledge to improve lives,” he said.
Equity Bank’s Micro Supervisor, Tony Obonyo, highlighted financial products designed for women, including EquiMama loans and Equi-Green Financing, which supports eco-friendly businesses.
The event also recognized top customers, with Caroline Adong awarded Best Mobilizer, Juliet Obedo as Top Saver, and Eunice Abeja as the Most Compliant Customer.
Looking ahead, Equity Bank plans to expand its mentorship programs, financial education, and partnerships to further support women entrepreneurs. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
