Here’s Why Kanyeihamba Chose To Be Buried at Buziga not Kigezi

Prof Kanyeihamba on the day he hosted Dr. Kizza Besigye at his Buziga home.

By Mulengera Reporters

The official program is out and it indicates that Prof GW Kanyeihamba will be buried in his Buziga compound and not Kigezi in Rubanda where he proudly hailed from. The program shows that on Wednesday, there will be a eulogy-making session at the Supreme Court headquarters in Kampala near City Square starting from 2pm. On Friday, there will be vigil at the deceased’s home in Buziga beginning from 11am for the rest of the day.

Then on Monday, there will be a Church service at All Saints Church in Nakasero where he will be prayed for and eulogies made to celebrate his memory. This starts at 9am. On Tuesday, there will be a large gathering to mark the main tribute-paying session at the Kabojja school grounds starting from 10am. All this will culminate into the burial ceremony at the fallen jurist’s nearby Buziga residence.

Strategically located on a hill, the Buziga residence sits on slightly under ½ acre of land and it comprises of the deceased’s storied residence and a large compound though not large enough to hold hundreds of mourners expected to send off Kanyeihamba. He will be buried at Buziga, and not in Ndorwa Kigezi, his birth place which he loved very much, because of reasons closely associated with the Kabaka of Buganda.

When still alive, Kanyeihamba used to give many generous media interviews to media houses including Mulengera News. Our YouTube crew often drove to his Buziga home for those insightful interviews and it was after one such interview that Prof Kanyeihamba casually told a story about his personal friendship with the Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Muwenda Mutebi who he said he had immense respect for.

He indicated the land on which his Buziga residence stands was donated to him by the Kabaka as a personal gift. He went on to explain that he willed that he must be buried at this same place, even when the piece of land is fairly small, in order to honour his personal friendship with the Kabaka.

He indicated it’s his wish that none of his descendants ever considers selling that Buziga place. And it seems he believed that being buried there would go a long way in constraining whoever will ever wish to sell of the land and thereby fortifying his wish.

So deep and profound was their friendship to the extent that whenever the Kabaka travelled abroad for medication and returned to Uganda, Kanyeihamba would be driven to the Kireka Palace in Kira Municipality to go and check on him. He would talk to the Kabaka even via telephone. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
