Ibrahim Kasozi Biribawa, a former Makindye East MP and a big man in FDC Najjanankumbi, has intensified preparations to run for Kampala Lord Mayor position in 2026. Sources close to him say that meetings have been going on at Kingdom hotel Kampala where Kasozi has been meeting his campaign team members to work out a winning strategy.
Until a few weeks ago, he was preparing to run for Makindye east MP seat to remove NUP’s Derrick Nyeko. Kasozi believes that to run for Kampala Lord Mayorship, one needs big money and he has already put aside more than Shs3bn which will be used to facilitate campaign activities. He personally is a rich man with businesses both in Kampala and his birth place in Mityana.
He realizes there is a huge chance to build a large coalition of disgruntled Kampala tycoons like Ham Kiggundu who don’t like Erias Lukwago. He is convinced that these anti-Lukwago tycoons can help him raise additional money to supplement on what he already has in place.
As of now, Kasozi is busy creating committees of people who will be in charge of different things on his campaign. For the first time, he is more than willing to consider abandoning FDC and join Kyagulanyi’s NUP in order to increase his chances against Lukwago. Kasozi is also willing to stand on the independent ticket if that can give comfort to key actors even in government and increase his chances at beating Erias Lukwago.
People at his Kingdom Kampala meetings are convinced that a coalition of all anti-Lukwago forces can be created and deliver victory. Kasozi’s handlers are also convinced that Kyagulanyi can sacrifice Balimwezo and endorse Kasozi since the two used to be very good friends and founded people power together in 2018.
As of that time, Kasozi was tired of being under the political control of Erias Lukwago, Betty Nambooze, Semujju Nganda who were the leading kingmakers in the opposition besides Dr. Kizza Besigye. He believed that Kyagulanyi would help to neutralize the three and then directly compete with Besigye for the position of overall opposition patriarch.
In Makindye, which he has abandoned, Kasozi expects to ally with the Mike Mabikke camp so that his structures back Mabikke against Nyeko as Mabikke’s also back him for lord Mayorship.
