On Tuesday night, scenes of shock and horror gripped the new Soroti University campus when the Academic Registrar, Mr. James Gregory Okello (56) was caught red handed stealing livestock from the University farm. The animals stolen included a goat and one of the bulls belonging to his employer.
Police was called in and the belligerent old man was caged and subsequently transferred to where thieves belong and that’s the police cells. Okello, who is deputized by his own sister in the AR office, was formally charged in Court and remanded to Soroti government prison until Friday 2nd February when he will be returned to court. The offence is theft of University cattle and the file number is CRB 058/2018. Investigators want to establish whether the Academic Registrar is in any way connected to livestock thefts that have lately been very rampant on the University farm. On this occasion, the man from Karachi in Kaberamaido was given away by a lady friend whom he had assigned to urgently get buyers for the cow. She was nabbed and led the security operatives to Okello insisting he was her Principal in committing the felonious act. In court, the much resented University official, who has been the master of intrigue against colleagues at the new Government University, had the company of his own brother to Charles Esesu who also serves as his Personal assistant. His unenviable predicament has since created euphoria amongst University staff against whom the former Makerere Assistant registrar has always labeled false accusations.
