FDC strongman Geoffrey Ekanya is apparently ready to endure all the humiliation in order to bounce back as Tororo County North MP. Starting out as youth MP Eastern region, Ekanya has been MP since leaving school and nothing else. Naturally he has found it hard to adjust to life away from the hefty groceries of Parliament which one doesn’t have to struggle much to access.

He was in 2016 defeated by Annet Nyakecho, an NRM-leaning independent who crossed over from being Otuke District woman MP in Lango to represent the Japs back home. Saying he had been cheated, Ekanya petitioned court and still Nyakecho floored him.

Since that time Ekanya has oscillated between activism in Kizza Besigye’s People’s Government and canvassing for support in the constituency while mending fences with those he had fallen out with. The man is these days common at funeral and other functions. The most recent one was in Mukuju where a one James was being buried.

Mukuju being a stronghold for his nemesis NRM-leaning Nyakecho, Ekanya has found the ground harder than anywhere else hence his decision to stoop as low as it takes to win over potential voters. At the Mukuju burial, Ekanya opted to soften voters’ hearts by going down on his knees, an act of humility that has since sharply divided opinions.
Some voters say Ekanya doesn’t deserve any more chance having eaten for 20 years without break. Some say apart from fighting the NRM and more so Museveni using the Parliamentary platform, Ekanya didn’t do much for the people.
Yet its for this anti-Museveni stance that some consider him deserving for a second chance. Vallynyapidi Ekisa says Ekanya must bounce back and carry on challenging Museveni and put Tororo flag high again.
Responding on the same social media platform, Mune Jose Paul says Ekanya is just a sympathy-seeker and however much he kneels, voters shouldn’t consider him again. Ekaba Thomas says you can’t criticize Museveni for ruling for too long when yourself is clinging onto an MP seat like it’s your family inheritance.
Etyang Alex says Ekanya may not be perfect but Nyakecho is even worse and must be gotten rid of at the earliest opportunity. Why? She ignored voters’ interests and concerns and voted for the scrapping of age limit in the constitution for which Etyang says voters shouldn’t easily forgive her.
Adkin Sandra is one of the diehard Nyakecho supporters on social media but Etyang says such people shouldn’t base on the tents and other groceries Nyakecho provides to be blinded from the bigger picture that requires politically punishing her for voting the Magezi bill clearly contrary to what majority Tororo North voters wanted.
