Ostensibly to aid ongoing investigations into her alleged role in MP Ibrahim Abiriga murder, the Buganda Road Court has directed Mukono Municipality MP Betty Nambooze to immediately surrender her phones, laptops, iPads & any other gadgets in her possession to the security agencies. The order shows that Nambooze shouldn’t expect them back until after a minimum of 14 days. The Magistrate indicates even after the 14 days, the state will be free to ask for extension in case they deem it necessary to complete their investigations. This move has sharply been condemned by Nambooze’s lawyers led by the indomitable Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago who has described the latest development as an attempt by the state to escalate emotional and physical torture of Nambooze who is already in hospital treating wounds which she says were inflicted on her by a police patrol vehicle that hit the police ambulance in which she was being carried from Nagalama police station to Kiruddu Hospital where she continues to get treatment under unabating detention by the police.

A short while ago, police operatives led by Vincent Sekate stormed her hospital bed to serve her the latest court order. Her lawyers maintain that the outspoken MP isn’t okay and needs to be rushed to India for better medical management but the state has so far not allowed her to leave the Kiruddu hospital room which UHRC Chairman Med Kaggwa says shouldn’t be turned into another detention facility for Nambooze. Petitioned by Nambooze, Kaggwa on Tuesday visited the Kiruddu facility and condemned the apparent physical and emotional torture the MP has endured for close to 10 days now.
