Col Kizza Besigye has said the political events in countries like Algeria, where street protests forced out long-serving leaders, can equally happen in Uganda. Appearing on Radio Simba’s popular Olutindo program Tuesday evening, Besigye said it’s so easy that even University students alone can force the NRM government out any day they choose. “We don’t need many people to achieve our goal in order to force out this regime. Even University students alone around Kampala can force out this regime if they determine. If it’s today which they have chosen to get him out they can do something similar to Algeria or even Sudan where dictators have been weakened through popular mass action,” Besigye said. “The University students numbering over 200,000 alone can overwhelm the regime out of power once they are well organized and determined to do so. It’s such actions that will set this country free and not going for dialogue with Museveni.” He added that the Boda Bodas alone can rise up and make Kampala ungovernable once well organized and determined to act. He said people should begin acting on their own because it’s their country rather than waiting for the leaders to come and lead in their respective communities. He said all Ugandans have a duty to get involved rather than wasting time demanding for his exit from politics. “We are in the trenches and the war is on. The other day we were in Kaliro and others too can go and lead somewhere else as we go in Kaliro. That’s how we can get the badly needed leadership for the struggle at the different levels,” Besigye said. The retired Colonel also responded to those asking him to hand over saying he has no formal leadership roles anymore to hand over to anyone. “I’m only doing my duty as a citizen which is to participate in the civic affairs of my country which I will do until the dictatorship has fallen or until I’m called to meet my creator.” Besigye also spoke about Lusanja land eviction victims whom he said would soon benefit from the fundraising efforts by his People’s Government in order to rebuild their lives.
