Dennis Majwala, a leading DP mobilizer for greater Masaka, has denounced Dr Abed Bwanika and warned his Party President General Norbert Mao to tread carefully saying Bwanika might be on a mission to finish off DP. Majwala said: “That man Bwanika has never been a genuine opposition member. He was created by Museveni to serve his purpose and belongs to artificial opposition created by the dictator himself. He is like Nelson Ocheger and he is there to create artificial opposition because Museveni knows the opposition can decide to boycott elections and created his buffer in Bwanika so that he can stand against him for his own legitimacy in case the serious opposition boycott.” Along with others like Saddam Gayira, Ocheger famously contested against Museveni’s Movement system in the referendum of the year 2000 which other opposition parties/multi-partists boycotted saying it was sham meant to legitimize the continued ban on political party activities. In the end, Ocheger joined NRM and is now Uganda’s ambassador to Nigeria. Majwala also advised his President Mao to ensure the Bwanika defection is serious and not just a dupe. “He should go and call a delegates conference of his PDP party and get a resolution and show us what he is adding on DP. You don’t build DP by adding just words aimed at undermining other credible leaders like Lukwago, Nambooze and Besigye. Yes we have issues with Besigye as DP but the larger struggle needs him. Attacking him is not what we need. We need numerical strength yet Bwanika is coming with nothing and wants to get the DP ticket for Bukoto South. We won’t accept that. They must show us what they are adding to our party. Mabikke and Bwanika must parade their NEC members and get all of them to announce they are now in DP,” said Majwala renowned for his militant approach. “He has been abusing our leaders. He abuses Besigye, Lukwago and Nambooze yet he never criticizes Museveni. He is never with us in the struggle yet he is always quick to abuse people who are struggling. He was here in Masaka and abused our Vice President Mbidde and even incited boys to rough him up. We demand Bwanika must first apologize and promise will never do that again.” Majwala added: “I urge my party leaders to concentrate on leaders like Erias Lukwago and Betty Nambooze because they are genuinely DP and they still profess the party unlike the Bwanika and Mabikke who have always belittled DP.” Majwala, a renowned strong ally of Mukasa Mbidde said his fellow party members should avoid being excited because there isn’t much SDP and PDP bosses can add to DP. He said the Political Organizations Act lays down a procedure through which one dissolves a party to defect to another and demanded for proof that Bwanika and Mabikke went through that procedure. He also recalled this isn’t the first time Mabikke has announced SDP dissolution and defection to DP. One time he was paraded as a defector back to DP during a party 60 years celebrations event in Gaba and had earlier on done the same at Nsambya Sharing Hall.
WHY THE ANXIETY;
Its not hard to understand the anxiety Mabikke and Bwanika’s defection has created among diehard DP supporters. Firstly the secrecy with which PG Mao negotiated their defection deal has created speculation. In absence of full details, supporters fear that the defection is meant to enable defectors get positions within DP and to also become flag bearers in national elections. Mind you DP will soon be conducting grass root elections leading to the delegates conference and in Bukoto South Lwengo district, supporters want Hakim Kizza to become the DP flag bearer against Hajji Muyanja Mbabali and have vowed to resist the Bwanika defection. Speculation is rife that some strategists in DP want to appease the defectors by making Mabikke replace late Matia Nsubuga as SG, Bwanika to replace Mohammed Kezaala as National Chairman, Sam Lubega to become National Organizing Secretary for DP and Lulume Bayiga to replace Betty Nambooze as party chairperson Buganda region. Nambooze remains suspended. Henry Lubowa, the SDP SG, is being proposed to become DP flag bearer for Rubaga North MP seat. Some DP diehards like Majwala think that failure to control Bobi Wine and be in charge of his People Power to the levels initially expected could have prompted the latest defections back to DP. “Bobi Wine was initially thought to be politically naive but has turned out too smart for anyone to manipulate. This necessitates sheltering in DP to at least have a position of responsibility and political address ahead of 2021,” said a source adding that defectors are unlikely to get any big NEC positions since Mao is naturally very suspicious and his right hand man Mbidde will always use money to control NEC and delegates conference outcomes each time members meet.
