Police in Bukwo District have started investigations into circumstances under which unknown assailants attacked a Police Post, stabbed a Police officer on duty and took off with guns. Police constable Walter Opio is nursing wounds at Mbale regional referral hospital following a raid on Alalam Police post in Bukwo District in Eastern Uganda by unknown assailants. A police officer who requested not to be named in the story said the thugs were using a motorcycle. He said the thugs stormed the Police post at around 7pm on Sunday night. The victim was manning the counter at the time of the attack. The Sipi region Police Spokesperson Rogers Taitika confirmed the incident and identified the injured police officer as Constable Walter Opio. The PRO said three thugs armed with knives stabbed and injured Constable Walter Opio before making off with his AK-47 rifle and over 30 rounds of ammunition. “It’s true the three assailants armed with knives attacked the police post at around 7.30pm on Sunday night. They stabbed the officer thrice in the stomach,” said Taitika adding that a police officer fell down and started bleeding. He said Police have embarked on hunting for these criminals to bring them to book. According to Taitika, the thugs made off with the gun of 30 rounds of ammunition. “We have started our investigations and we have started tracing some and progressing well. We are working with our intelligence within the region,” he said. He appealed to residents to work hand in hand with police to trace the assailants. “We appeal to residents who have leads of these assailants to come out and report to Police secretly because the gun was loaded and can cause harm,” he said. Taitika urged residents to volunteer any information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers. Bukwo District boarders Kenya and Amudat district in Karamoja respectively. This is the third attack on Police officers in less than two three years in Sebei sub region. Previously gunmen attacked Kapchorwa Central Police Station, leaving one police officer dead. Other thugs also attacked Bukwo Central Police Station. (For comments, email us on mulengera2040@gmail.com).
