Uganda’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) remain firmly on course, with the Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium in Lira City set to serve as a standby venue, officials have confirmed.
Dr. Denis Mugimba, Chairperson of the Communications and Signage Sub-Committee of the CHAN/AFCON Local Organizing Committee, said construction of the stadium is progressing steadily and remains fully funded.
“Akii Bua Stadium will be ready as a standby facility for AFCON 2027,” Dr. Mugimba stated, emphasizing that there has been no deviation from the original construction plan. He added that the government has already secured the necessary funding and that works on site are advancing satisfactorily under the contractor.
Recent government updates indicate that construction of the multi-billion shilling facility has reached nearly 50 percent completions, with progress reportedly ahead of schedule. Key structural elements, including the reinforced concrete ground floor for the hostel and clubhouse, have already been completed. Excavation works for the swimming pool and changing rooms are also finalized.
In addition, drainage systems for both training pitches, one equipped with an athletics track and another without—have been completed, while construction of the perimeter wall currently stands at 40 percent.
During a recent site visit, the State Minister for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang, commended the pace of construction and credited President Yoweri Museveni for fulfilling his commitment to establish a modern sports facility in the region.
The Akii-Bua Olympic Stadium is designed as a multi-sport complex featuring a football pitch, athletics track, rugby-compatible field, and a semi-Olympic swimming pool. The facility will also include outdoor courts, an indoor arena, and a hostel capable of accommodating up to 150 athletes.
Dr. Mugimba further highlighted the importance of complementary training facilities, noting that institutions such as Lira University, Gulu University, Pece Stadium, and the Annex training facility at ECOS are integral to the stadium’s readiness for international competition.
He explained that the strategic placement of training facilities within educational institutions is intended to foster talent development. According to him, this approach aligns with global trends where sports talent is often nurtured within academic environments.
Beyond hosting AFCON matches, Dr. Mugimba said the infrastructure investments are expected to deliver long-term benefits to Uganda’s sports sector. He called on stakeholders within the sports fraternity to focus on ensuring that the facilities are effectively marketed and maintained to become self-sustaining centers for talent development.
The National Council of Sports is expected to develop a comprehensive strategy to support the maintenance and sustainability of the facilities, including attracting private investment.
Uganda is also positioning itself for future continental events, with a bid already submitted to host the All Africa Games in 2031. Officials say the ongoing infrastructure development will ensure the country is well-prepared for such opportunities without the need for rushed construction.
Meanwhile, the government has established an intersectoral coordination framework, led by the First Lady Janet Kataaha Museveni, to streamline preparations and ensure broader national participation in AFCON-related activities. This includes collaboration with the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives to facilitate business involvement and eliminate barriers to participation.
Authorities have also acknowledged past shortcomings in fan engagement, particularly during CHAN 2024, and say plans are underway to establish more fan zones across the country. Resources have already been allocated to improve the overall fan experience ahead of the tournament.
With multiple projects underway, including additional upgrades at Kyambogo University, Uganda’s AFCON 2027 preparations are entering a critical phase, with officials expressing confidence in timely delivery and lasting impact.
