Veteran city lawyer Peter Mukidi Walubiri once spoke in a media interview and faulted President Museveni for being comfortable appointing to cabinet people who would ordinarily not be employable anywhere else in Uganda. Kiira Municipality MP Semujju Nganda later corroborated this by famously claiming if there was a merit-based interview at any of the corporate firms in Kampala, many in President Museveni’s cabinet would trail.
But not so with former Minister Prince Rabwoni Kabakumba Matsiko. Mulengera News is pleased to report that the bubbly former Bujenje County MP recently landed a salaried job to work as a budding lawyer at a law firm owned by Uganda Law Society President Simon Peter Kinobe.
The law firm is based along Nkrumah Road down town where Kabakumba frequents on a daily basis like any other disciplined employee that is keen not to offend his or her employers. The former Minister would ordinarily be well possessed with means to open and operate her own law firm but being a strictly disciplined and highly regulated profession, Law Council can’t allow nascent LDC graduates to operate law firms in their own name.
Besides, Kabakumba needs experience to be nurtured well before she can move out to face the legal world on her own. Knowledgeable sources say even when she was never comfortable contradicting the security agencies’ habit of violating rights of opposition members during her hey days, Kabakumba is these days a diehard defender of human rights and many anticipate human rights litigation is one area she could distinguish herself in as a very good lawyer.
There is hope among her supervisors that she stands a chance to make it as a good lawyer except that she is so much addicted to state groceries that the temptation to rejoin elective politics has refused to go away from her. Reports reaching us from Masindi indicate that her budding law practice notwithstanding, the Bunyoro princess is rejoining the race for Masindi Municipality MP Seat where uprooting the incumbent Ernest Kizza will clearly not be an easy task.
