They say, “A bird builds its nest with small twigs,” and for many women in Masaka, their small businesses are the twigs they are using to build better futures. Recognizing this, Equity Bank has expanded its Abakyala Ku Ntiiko initiative, a program dedicated to empowering women in micro and small-scale businesses with financial literacy, access to capital, and networking opportunities.
The second edition of the initiative in Masaka brought together women from various sectors, business owners, professionals, and entrepreneurs, to discuss a crucial challenge: balancing work and personal life.
During the discussions, seasoned professionals shared insights on financial discipline, the importance of hiring trustworthy staff, and the value of maintaining proper business records. “The people you employ can either build or break your business,” advised Dr. Olive Nabirye, a businesswoman and employee of the National Water and Sewerage Corporation. She encouraged women to establish professional relationships with their staff to foster business growth.
Mrs. Kellen Nampurira, CEO of Zebra Hotel, shared her inspiring journey from working in a bakery to owning one of Masaka’s top hotels. She urged women to embrace patience and consistency in business.
Police officer and entrepreneur Jessica Naawe emphasized the importance of saving in groups. “If you are doing something productive, whether business or formal work, and not just relying on handouts, life becomes easier,” she said.
The Bank used the event to introduce financial products tailored for women, including EquiMama, which combines business financing with health insurance. “With EquiMama, women not only get financial support but also health coverage, ensuring they stay strong and focused on their businesses,” explained Florence Bukko Nakku, a Micro Banking Officer at the bank.
Masaka Branch Manager Darius Tumwesigire reaffirmed Equity’s commitment to supporting women. “We are here to serve women and provide the financial tools they need to grow their businesses,” he stated.
As the Abakyala Ku Ntiiko initiative continues to expand, it serves as a reminder that when women are given the right support, their businesses, and their families flourish.
After all, as another proverb goes, that [When you empower a woman, you empower a nation]. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
