The Western Regional Film Competitions (RFC) 2026 have successfully concluded in Hoima City, marking another milestone in Uganda’s growing film industry and efforts to nurture talent beyond the Capital.
The week-long event, held from March 22 to 27, brought together emerging filmmakers from across the Western region for an intensive programme blending training, collaboration, and hands-on production.
Organized under the auspices of the Uganda Communications Commission, the competition focused on equipping participants with practical skills in scripting, directing, production techniques, and post-production. A strong emphasis was placed on telling authentic local stories, with participants encouraged to draw from their communities and lived experiences to create compelling narratives.
Throughout the programme, filmmakers worked in teams to conceptualize and produce short films, gaining real-world experience in the full production cycle—from idea development to final edit. The initiative also fostered teamwork and creative exchange, helping participants sharpen both their technical and storytelling abilities.
The competitions culminated in a vibrant Awards Gala held on March 27, attended by key stakeholders in the creative industry. The event was graced by Chief Guest Balaam Barugahara, the State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs while UCC’s senior leadership was represented by Haruna Musinguzi, Director for Finance.
Outstanding filmmakers were recognized across several categories, including Best Film and Best Community/Impactful Film. Winners received cash prizes, hampers, and certificates in recognition of their creativity and excellence. Selected productions will now advance to compete at the prestigious Uganda Film Festival, offering participants a national platform to showcase their work.
This year’s Western RFC reinforced UCC’s commitment to decentralizing film industry development by taking opportunities closer to regional talent. It also highlighted the importance of promoting diverse Ugandan stories while strengthening the country’s audiovisual sector.
Building on the success of previous editions, RFC 2026 in Hoima maintained strong momentum, leaving participants better equipped and more confident to contribute to Uganda’s evolving film landscape.
