By Our Reporters

There are things that normally functioning corporate entities must do including meeting the obligation to invest in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. Of all things, Uganda Telecom (UTL) isn’t one company one would ordinarily expect to engage in such activities that fast given the picture of hopelessness that was painted by the MPs in their report showing the extent to which the company was indebted and deserved to be wound up. It took the wise leadership of President Museveni, prompted by Investment & Privatization Minister Evelyn Anite, to give UTL a chance under the administration period spearheaded by Administrator Twebaze Bemanya (of URSB). Indeed the Bemanya administration team has achieved and accomplished things that nobody ever imagined they would accomplish (turning around the company) in just less than one year. The prudent management practices that have been ushered in during the administration period have ignited investor confidence to the extent that, as we talk right now, on the table of Minister Anite are a number of offers by serious global entities wanting to acquire a stake and invest in the company. But that is a story for another day. For today’s purposes we are simply reporting about a CSR activity that UTL held on Friday at its headquarters in Kampala and our lens man was there to get some pictures. The UTL staff, led by their PR manager Jackie, participated in the Free Health Camp that was held at the head office. During the Camp, held under the UTL “U-CAN” initiative, hundreds of Ugandans accessed free health services including cancer screening. The others included testing blood sugar levels, optical checkup, HIV testing & counselling, advice on nutrition/healthy living, dentistry checkup and lifestyle diseases. The UTL staff also donated blood during the day long medical camp at Telephone House. Jackie explained this is the only way UTL can reciprocate the support their ongoing revamp has enjoyed from the public. Story picked from Red Pepper with some modifications
