The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has sent out a powerful public notice and the clock is ticking fast.
In a dramatic move, URA has announced a waiver on interest and penalties for taxpayers with outstanding principal tax as of 30th June 2024. But there is a catch. The principal tax must be fully paid by 30th June 2026.
This is a golden chance for thousands of taxpayers across Uganda.
If you clear your principal tax before the deadline, URA will wipe away the interest and penalties attached to it. Even if you pay only part of the principal tax, you will still enjoy a waiver on the interest and penalties linked to the amount you have paid.
But this offer will not last forever.
In a public notice issued online, URA has warned that the waiver will expire in less than five months. Anyone who fails to pay the principal tax by 30th June 2026 will be required to pay all the accumulated interest and penalties in full.
The waiver only applies to taxes that were due on or before 30th June 2024. It also covers interest that builds up between 1st July 2024 and 30th June 2026 — as long as the principal tax is paid.
However, customs taxes and duties are not included in this offer.
Taxpayers are urged to check their outstanding balances immediately. They can log into their TIN accounts on the URA portal or visit the nearest URA office for help. URA is also sending SMS and email notifications to affected taxpayers.
For those who disagree with their tax balances, URA advises them to quickly contact the authority for clarification.
The message is clear, act now or pay more later. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
