Karamoja is witnessing a water revolution! In a short video shared on X (formerly Twitter), Shamim Kassim Iriama, Miss Tourism Karamoja 2025, is seen happily pumping water from a borehole in her traditional Karamajong attire.
The daughter of the soil praised the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) for transforming life in the region by extending can water to nearly every household.
“Some time back, access to water was a big challenge in our community,” Iriama tweeted on 20th December 2025. “Today, @nwscug has installed at least one tap in every household, a truly commendable step. Come visit Karamoja!”
Iriama, who is committed to changing the narrative of Karamoja and inspiring young people, expressed excitement over the progress made. She highlighted how clean water access has begun to empower families, improve health, and support local development.
This milestone comes alongside a major government initiative. President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni recently announced plans to establish individualized water systems for commercial farmers and small-scale producers, aiming to boost productivity and reduce poverty. Speaking at Kalas Girls Primary School in Amudat District, the President said that giving every productive household reliable water would be a turning point in Uganda’s rural transformation strategy.
Karamoja, a region long affected by drought and limited water sources, has historically struggled to meet the needs of its communities. Government data shows that only 18% of villages in Amudat District had access to safe water, leaving more than 80% of residents without clean and reliable sources.
Through partnerships with UNICEF, KOICA, Welthungerhilfe, and the Karamoja Umbrella of Water and Sanitation (KUWS), NWSC has been installing new boreholes, solar water systems, and improved management strategies. These efforts focus on schools, health facilities, and small towns, steadily bringing the region closer to SDG, clean water for all.
