Tragedy Strikes Uganda Cranes as Bus Accident Claims Life of Boda Boda Rider
By BM Musanje
A fatal accident occurred along the Northern Bypass near Kisasi Flyover in Kampala on July 29, 2025, involving a CAF King Long Bus assigned to the Uganda national football team, the Cranes ahead of CHAN 2024 tournament.
The bus, driven by Khalid Ahmed, collided with a motorcycle after allegedly swerving to avoid an oncoming trailer, claiming the life of a Boda Boda rider.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson says the Boda Boda rider’s identity hasn’t been established, and their body was conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for post-mortem examination.
He adds that both the bus and motorcycle are currently parked at Kira Road Police Station pending further inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles.
This incident brings back memories of a similar accident involving the Uganda Cranes team in 2015.
On December 8, 2015, the team’s bus collided with a taxi at Jami Trading Centre in Budaka District, resulting in seven deaths and several injuries.
President Museveni promised Shs 1 billion as compensation for the victims’ families, but the payment is yet to be made.
In preparation for the upcoming CHAN 2024 tournament, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety Police released traffic guidelines to manage the increased vehicular movement of teams, guests, and delegates.
The tournament will be hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania from August 2 to 29, 2025, with games played at Mandela National Stadium Namboole in Bweyogerere. On Tuesday, the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety of Police top issued traffic guidelines to manage increased vehicular movement.
