Uganda Airlines Takes Flight to London: Unlocking Boundless Trade, Tourism & National Prestige

A bird that does not fly will never know where the field is greener, and Uganda Airlines is now spreading its wings to new horizons.

The national carrier has confirmed plans to launch direct flights from Entebbe to London Gatwick Airport, a move expected to strengthen trade, investment, and tourism between Uganda and the United Kingdom (UK).

Uganda primarily exports coffee, bananas, and tea to the UK, with total exports reaching $19.6 million (about sh70 billion) in 2023, according to international trade data. The introduction of direct flights is anticipated to streamline cargo transport and expand business opportunities.

Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Bamuturaki recently confirmed the development, stating that the airline has secured landing rights and is finalizing logistical arrangements before announcing the official launch date.

“We are soon launching flights to London Gatwick. We have obtained the rights and are only working on the remaining paperwork,” she said, without revealing further details.

The announcement follows a recent post on the airline’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, which hinted that the much-anticipated route could begin as early as this summer. “The wait is almost over. Entebbe-London Gatwick is coming soon,” the tweet read.

The move fills a gap left by British Airways, which discontinued its Entebbe-London route in 2015 after more than six decades of operation. Aviation industry sources have indicated that Uganda Airlines has already listed London Gatwick on its booking system, suggesting that ticket sales may open soon.

Beyond London, Uganda Airlines is also planning new routes to Accra in Ghana and Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, further expanding its international network. The airline, which currently operates 20 daily flights across 16 routes, has recently added Abuja, Harare, and Lusaka to its destinations.

The expansion comes as Uganda Airlines works to reduce operational losses. According to the Auditor General’s report, the airline’s losses dropped to shs248 billion last year from shs266 billion the previous year, signaling an improvement in financial performance.

Shakila Rahim Lamar, the airline’s head of corporate affairs, noted that the London route would provide a significant revenue boost. “We are unlocking Uganda’s trade potential, and this route will enhance our export capabilities,” she said, highlighting the airline’s 280% cargo growth over time.

Entebbe International Airport has also seen significant progress, now serving 35 international destinations compared to just nine before Uganda Airlines resumed operations. With direct flights to major global hubs, Uganda is strengthening its position as a key player in regional and international aviation.

As the national carrier spreads its wings to new destinations, it is clear that Uganda Airlines is not just flying, but soaring towards greater economic opportunities. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
