In the midst of political turmoil and growing tensions in Uganda, Winnie Byanyima has firmly stated that her family’s longstanding friendship with President Yoweri M7 remains intact, despite their significant political differences.
With her husband, Dr. Kizza Besigye, facing serious treason charges, Byanyima is urging the public to separate personal relationships from legal matters, emphasizing that the ongoing case against Besigye is purely political.
“President M7 is our family friend, and that friendship remains,” Byanyima said in a recent interview at her Kasangati residence. “As a family, we continue to uphold this bond, even as we differ politically. I urge people not to view Besigye’s case through the lens of family ties.”
This comes as Dr. Besigye, alongside Captain Denis Oola and Haji Obeid Lutale, was charged with treason and misprision of treason after allegedly plotting to overthrow the Ugandan government. The trio was remanded to Luzira Prison and could face the death penalty if convicted.
Byanyima stressed that their personal relationship with Museveni should not influence the legal proceedings. “We are not seeking any special favors,” she asserted. “Just because we once knew the President doesn’t mean he should exempt Besigye from facing the law. The legal process must run its course.”
Her comments serve as a strong reminder that personal friendships and political disagreements should not overshadow the justice system, reinforcing the principle that legal matters must be handled without bias or favoritism.
