A tragic incident has occurred at Kagoma Sub-county Police Station in Jinja District, where a 30-year-old man, Dan Mugeri, was found dead under strange circumstances.
His passing has raised concerns, as police believe he may have taken his own life while in custody.
Mugeri, a resident of Magamaga East village in Buwenge rural sub-county, had been arrested earlier on Friday morning after being handed over to police by local authorities.
The arrest followed accusations of stealing Shs 500,000 from his employer in Bukomansimbi district back in January 2025. He had fled to Jinja, attempting to avoid capture, but his past eventually caught up with him.
At around 10:30 in the morning that same day, police discovered Mugeri’s lifeless body in his cell.
Reports suggest that he used his trousers to take his own life. It’s also been revealed that since his return to Jinja, Mugeri had shown signs of emotional distress, even hinting at the possibility of harming himself.
Kiira region Police Spokesperson, James Mubi, acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and announced plans for a mental health sensitization campaign. This initiative aims to help people spot early warning signs of depression and suicidal thoughts, ensuring timely support and intervntion.
A team of police officers, including detectives, Scene of Crime Officers, and Buwenge’s DPC, SP Morris Oyee, have launched an investigation into Mugeri’s death. Magistrate Her Worship Betty Lukuse was also part of the team that visited the scene.
Authorities have expressed their commitment to conducting a thorough investigation, as well as emphasizing the importance of mental health awareness.
They are urging the public to support individuals going through emotional challenges, reminding everyone that with proper care, suicide can be prevented.
This unfortunate incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health, particularly in communities where individuals may not have access to the help they need.
