Reliable insiders say Serena Hotel and Conference Center Kampala is destined for prolonged closure to pave way for major refurbishment works and technological upgrades. Uganda’s leading hotel facility belongs to the Agha Khan Group which owns similar recreation facilities elsewhere in the EAC region’s capitals. Serena Kampala the way we know it today was first erected in mid 2000s and the top bosses in the parent holding company (TPS East Africa) feel its high time the facility is given a new look.
Increased group profitability exceeding Shs7bn for last year 2018 alone is the reason why guys at the Group level consider the refurbishment justified and something that makes business sense.
During the refurbishment period, the Kampala Serena facility will most likely be closed for the rest of especially conference and banqueting business to be relocated to Kigo-based Victoria Serena, another swanky lodging facility which equally is owned by the same TPS Group. Last year’s Shs7bn Group profit was calculated off the Shs235bn that was made in total Group sales.
The 2018’s good sales figures have since excited the managers calling shots at the TPS Group level to the extent of growing appetite to plunge into the gradually-pacifying DRC where a Serena Hotel will soon be unveiled having secured the necessary assurances, investment concessions and rebates from the new DR government. It will be located in the Congolese City of Goma where it’s expected to be operational in the last quarter of this year 2019.
The Goma Serena will be joining other TPS Group recreation facilities including the Kampala Serena, Serena Kenya, Kampala Serena, Kigali Serena and the one in Tanzania as well as another in Mozambique. The upcoming refurbishment on the Kampala facility will affect both the hotel and Conferencing aspects of Kampala Serena Hotel.
