Speaker of Parliament Nalongo Anita Among has this Wednesday ordered the Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige to quickly procure a brand new SUV vehicle for the newly-inaugurated Kawempe North MP Erias Nalukoola Luyimbazi.
This directive was rendered at the Speaker’s Board Room where Nalukoola’s swearing-in ceremony was held. Anita Among herself presided over and explained that it had to be inside her Board Room because Parliament is currently not having plenary sessions to allow Committees time to process Ministerial Policy Statements.
Patronizing as always, Speaker Among quickly created personal chemistry with Nalukoola who she kept addressing as “Erias” as if they have been close and known each other for such a long time. She smiled and ululated as Nalukoola, in a subsequent speech, introduced his father Hajji Swaib Sserunjogi, wife Shakirah Nansukusa and one of his children who came with him.
He also introduced some of his key foot soldiers or supporters including Bobi Giant and spiritual leaders like Nasser Kibirige Takuba (also former Kawempe Division Mayor). Nalukoola also cracked up Anita Among into prolonged laughter when he demanded that when time for plenary comes, she should allow him more time to make longer speeches than any other MPs because Kawempe North needs affirmative action when it comes to time allocated for MPs to make their submissions.
Nalukoola got Anita Among to commit herself this would happen by asserting that his predecessor Mohammed Ssegirinya suffered ill health and imprisonment immediately after getting elected and taking oath in 2021, which deprived the people of Kawempe of effective representation.
Nalukoola also thanked Speaker Among for expediting his swearing-in ceremony as opposed to dragging her feet like the Electoral Commission had done when required to have his win gazetted.
Nalukoola was escorted by his NUP party leaders like Joel Ssenyonyi, the LoP and Deputy President Muwanga Kivumbi (who also chairs Buganda Caucus in Parliament) among others.
In the presence and hearing of Anita Among, Ssenyonyi told Nalukoola that, at the Parliament which he has just joined, things are real tough and wished him a good time since he too is a tough man.
Describing the new MP as a high value legislator, Muwanga Kivumbi implored LoP Joel Ssenyonyi to deploy Nalukoola to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) which he chairs because its where his superior brain and dedication is needed or required most.
Nalukoola, addressing reporters outside the Speaker’s Board Room, implored Gen Museveni to concede defeat and prepare to get used to him being part of the 11th Parliament because he is the one the people of Kawempe North had chosen while rejecting Faridah Nambi who was the candidate for the ruling NRM.
Speaking with his characteristic sarcasm, Nalukoola counseled that the veteran leader from Rwakitura has to accept that in a democracy, which Uganda purports to be, there can only be one winner at a time-and it’s him and the NUP party for now and not anyone else.
