The Women’s League leader of DP, Sarah Adong, has urged women across the country not to disrespect their husbands during the upcoming International Women’s celebrations which will be marked on March 8, 2026.
Speaking on Tuesday during the party’s weekly press conference at the DP headquarters in Mengo on Balintuma Road, Adong said that although the day is meant to celebrate women and promote their empowerment, it should not be turned into a platform for humiliating men or reversing family roles.
Adong said she has observed a trend where some women abandon their normal responsibilities on Women’s Day and demand that their husbands carry out house chores such as cooking and other domestic duties. She argued that this misrepresents the purpose of the day, and that women’s empowerment doesn’t mean lowering men or forcing them to do what they are not prepared for.
“Empowerment is about growth, dignity and opportunity, not competition in the home,” Adong said.
She emphasized that a woman, regardless of her social status, education level or position in society, should remain respectful and submissive within her marriage. According to her, respect is key to maintaining harmony in families.
Adong advised women to use the day to reflect on personal development, economic empowerment and strengthening their relationships instead of creating tension at home. She encouraged women to show extra care to their husbands so that appreciation, such as being taken out or being cooked for, comes naturally and not through pressure.
She further warned that misunderstanding the true meaning of International Women’s Day has in some cases led to domestic misunderstandings, quarrels and even violence. According to her, some relationships and marriages have ended because couples interpret the day differently.
Adong called on women to celebrate the day responsibly and in a way that builds families rather than divides them. She maintained that empowerment should focus on education, leadership, among others, while preserving respect within the home.
