Uganda’s Ministry of Health has issued an update regarding the ongoing outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease that began on 30th January 2025.
The latest development includes the confirmation of a new Ebola case in Mulago, a resident of Kibuli, who was linked to the initial cluster of cases.
The Ministry reported that the individual, a four-and-a-half-year-old child, presented symptoms of Ebola and sadly passed away on 25th February 2025, while under care at Mulago hospital.
As of today, there have been a total of 10 confirmed cases, with both the first case, also known as the index case, and the 10th case having died from the disease.
Despite the tragic losses, there is some hope. On 18th and 19th February, the Ministry discharged eight recovered Ebola survivors, who had been hospitalized in Kampala and Mbale. These survivors have successfully reintegrated into their communities and are living normal lives once again, proving that [after the storm, comes the calm].
In a bid to control the outbreak, the Ministry of Health has intensified its efforts. These include contact tracing, managing and vaccinating all individuals linked to the confirmed cases.
The Ministry is also enhancing surveillance, conducting active case searches at health facilities, and performing exit screenings for travelers.
The Ministry has reassured the public that the situation is under control, and Uganda remains safe for trade, travel, and tourism.
However, the Ministry urges all travelers to follow safety protocols such as regular hand washing with soap or hand sanitizers and avoiding unnecessary physical contact.
[Prevention is better than cure], and the Ministry encourages the public to remain vigilant. Anyone who notices symptoms consistent with Ebola is urged to report them to the nearest health facility or call the Ministry’s toll-free line at 0800-100-066.
The fight against Ebola continues, but with concerted effort and unity, Uganda will overcome this challenge, just as it has faced many before. (For comments on this story, get back to us on 0705579994 [WhatsApp line], 0779411734 & 041 4674611 or email us at mulengeranews@gmail.com).
