A relaxing evening turned into a fiery nightmare Sunday night when a thunderous explosion tore through the sauna of the upscale Buziga Country Resort, leaving three women critically injured including a respected village leader.
At exactly 8:30 PM, the peaceful ambiance of the Makindye-based resort was shattered by what eyewitnesses describe as a “massive boom” that sent shockwaves rippling through the luxurious compound.
“I thought it was a bomb,” gasped a shaken hotel guest. “There was a loud bang, then smoke, flames, and people screaming. It was chaos.”
Inside the sauna the very heart of the blast lay the most horrific scene.
69-year-old Hajjati Mastula, the Vice Chairperson of Katuuso village, suffered gruesome burns across her chest and back. She had reportedly been enjoying a quiet steam session before being thrown by the blast.
With her were two other victims: Zahara Nakaweesi, who sustained burns across her body and a shattered leg, and Mamrum Aisha, whose body was scorched by the intense flames. All three women were initially rushed to Kiruddu Hospital, but their condition was so dire that they were later transferred to Nsambya and Mulago Hospitals** for specialized care.
Authorities are still scrambling for answers.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire confirmed the explosion at the Police headquarters in Naguru today, stating that investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the blast. So far, no foul play has been ruled out.
The blast left a trail of destruction in its wake: part of the sauna collapsed entirely, walls were ripped with deep cracks, and the floor was littered with shattered glass, metal shards, and chunks of concrete. The once-pristine wellness area now resembles a war zone.
“This wasn’t a small fire. It was an explosion powerful enough to tear through walls,” said a rescue worker at the scene.
The resort, popular among Kampala’s elite for its serene setting and wellness services, has since shut down its sauna and spa sections, and security forces have cordoned off the area.
While police haven’t disclosed the possible cause, early speculations point to a potential gas leak or electrical fault but questions remain. How could such a catastrophic event happen at a top-tier establishment? Were there safety lapses? And could it have been prevented?
As the victims battle for their lives, the city is left stunned and angry. Families and friends of the injured are demanding answers and accountability.
Meanwhile, investigators and forensic experts are working round the clock, combing through debris and surveillance footage in hopes of uncovering the truth behind the mysterious blast.
One thing is certain: what was meant to be a peaceful evening of pampering turned into a horror story, and Kampala is reeling from the shock.
