Anglican Archbishop Stephen Kazimba Mugalu has this Wednesday added his voice to that of Parliament and others to condemn the crude brutality the security forces and more so the masked JATT operatives have lately been unleashing on Ugandans as part of their efforts to diminish and suffocate the NUP political support in the going campaigns to fill the Kawempe North MP Seat.
NUP candidate is Erias Luyimbazi Nalukoola who is facing off with NRM’s Faridah Nambi and a few other peripheral candidates. Because he is the one the ruling regime feels most threatened about, Nalukoola has suffered a lot of violence from security forces including the masked JATT operatives who this week stormed the NUP camp and clobbered Nalukoola supporters as if they are beating cobra snakes.
Several were arrested and locked up as others were tortured in broad day light prompting a newspaper to run a screaming headline “Who are They?” This was in a bid to unmask the masked men who descended on Nalukoola supporters and violently clobbered them as if they had their debt.
Many leaders have been reacting in a rage including Parliament whose Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa made it clear during the plenary session of Parliament that such actions bruised Uganda’s image as a country and weakened the NRM party and government as opposed to strengthening it.
This Wednesday Kazimba preached at a church service at Parliament to mark the beginning of the lent period and had no kind words for the brutal security operatives. Kazimba said much as its unacceptable for ordinary civilians to behave provocatively towards men in uniform, it was equally repugnant for the excessive force to be unleashed to the levels that were seen in Kawempe this week.
He reminded JATT operatives to remember that these are their fellow Ugandans who shouldn’t be treated brutally simply because they have divergent political views.
“Yes its wrong to provoke security forces but its even more unacceptable to beat fellow Ugandans like that as if they are cows,” Kazimba said imploring such brutes to reflect on the meaning and message of the lent period and begin treating fellow humans with love as opposed to brutalizing them indiscriminately.
