High drama unfolded at the Makindye Division headquarters as Speaker Charles Luba Lwanga was caught in a frantic race against time, not for votes, but for signatures!
After being humiliated by the National Unity Platform (NUP), who chose John Bosco Lusagala as their official mayoral flag bearer, Luba stormed into the nomination ring as an independent but without one key weapon: enough signatures.
According to the Electoral Commission, every candidate must present 20 verified voters from each of the division’s 21 parishes, a tough requirement totaling 420 signatures.
For Luba, this was a political Everest, and he had no climbing gear.
From Speaker to Signature Beggar?
Sources inside Makindye HQ say Luba arrived early, but empty-handed, lacking the full list of registered voters. Instead of heading out to rally support, he locked himself inside the division premises, reportedly copying names from nominated councilors in a desperate attempt to meet the quota.
“How did he match those names with signatures?” one official whispered. No clear answer. No clear process. Just chaos.
Tension Boils Over
As the clock ticked toward the close of day-one nominations, Luba was still scribbling, begging, and bartering for signatures. One election officer was overheard asking him, “Why are you still here? Go and look for voters!” But Luba wasn’t leaving until he got on that ballot and somehow, he did.
With minutes to spare, the embattled Speaker was officially nominated as an independent, choosing a clock as his symbol, a fitting emblem for a man who beat the clock to stay in the race.
The Battle Lines Are Drawn
He’ll now face NRM candidate Yasini Omari, who entered the race with grand promises to fix the division’s broken drainage, boost health workers’ pay, and expand public services.
Luba, for his part, is promising modern markets and improved infrastructure but many are still asking: If he struggled this hard just to get signatures, can he really lead a whole division?
